Absenses

Please see me after/before school to get make up work. You have 2 days for each day you’re absent to make up work, and up to one week after your return to make up assessments. Please try to schedule these after school so you don’t miss more class time.

Homework

Homework will be assigned 2-4 nights/week. Plan on spending around 30 minutes on your math homework when it is assigned. Some homework assignments will request you use a graphing calculator, if you don’t have one, you may stay after school and borrow mine. Homework should be done by students individually, so that I can monitor each person’s progress.

Help

If a student is struggling, I am very excited to help get them where they need to be in their learning. Sometimes I will suggest a student get additional help, and sometimes a student feels they need additional help, either way…I’m available most days after school for a deeper analysis into what is going on, a consultation, suggestions, tutoring or whatever the student needs. I just ask that the student double check with me beforehand to schedule a time.

Standards Based Grading

  • Know which standard you are working on
  • Know which standard you are being assessed on and when
  • Keep a list of the standards in the front of your notebook each quarter and number problems/sections as you work so you can look back and study them later

As taken from the report cards:

Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the grade level content/course and consistently applies the benchmarks, and/or concepts, and/or processes/procedures in a variety of contexts.

A

Demonstrates understanding of the grade level content/course and applies the benchmarks, and/or concepts, and/ or processes/procedures in a variety of contexts.

P

Demonstrates partial understanding and application of the benchmarks, and/or concepts, and/or processes/procedures of the grade level content.

N

Specifically, in math,

4-Advanced (A)
Goes above and beyond by asking, experimenting or solving an extension of a problem, can apply concept to a new and different context.
Ex. Extension problems, asking questions to extend the problem into another context, solving a problem with advanced math.

3-Proficient (B)

Can solve problems with no errors or minor errors. Can be fixed with written feedback.

2- Partially Proficient (C)

Shows knowledge of concept, maybe misuses it, mixes it up or major errors. Needs additional instruction, time, practice and/or work.

1-Unsatisfactory (D)

Shows very little understanding of concept and/or doesn’t use the concept appropriately. Shows no work (with or without the right answer). Needs additional instruction, time, practice and/or work.

0-No evidence (F)

Did not do or no understanding of concept.

Formative Assessments:
Assessments while you are still learning a concept. These will be short and will be assessing what you are currently learning (in a lesson or investigation). These questions will likely a variety of MORE, OYO and Checkpoints from the book. Also, during class time I will be making notes on how you are doing with the standards. These assessments may or may not be announced as they will be ongoing at least once a week. The formative assessments counts for a small part of your grade as you are still learning the concept and should be learning from your mistakes.

Summative Assessments:
Assessments after you have learned a concept. These will be longer and more in depth as they should be a concluding assessment of a concept. You should have reviewed, made improvements and fixed up any misconceptions by this point. These assessments will be announced and will be at the end of a concept (usually a unit). These assessments could be in the form of quizzes, tests and projects from the book with a variety of types of questions. This accounts for most of your grade.
