Good attendance is of paramount importance to academic performance and overall success of students. Absences, whether excused or unexcused, are detrimental to the learning process. Work made up outside of class is not as effective as the actual classroom experience. Class discussions, lab work, simulations, student-to-student interaction and student-teacher interaction cannot be replicated outside the classroom or at a later time. Regular attendance develops habits that are essential for success in the working world.

Face of Clock

  • Parents or legal guardians should report absences by 9:00 AM on the day of the absence. School Messenger will begin calling to notify parents/guardians for students whose absences have not been excused beginning at 9:00 am.

  • Absences are EXCUSED for the following reasons: illness, injury, medical or dental appointments, family emergency, court or law enforcement authority, or school-sponsored activities.

  • Absences are UNEXCUSED if the parent/guardian was not aware of the absence, did not call to report the absence, or when the reason for absence did not meet school criteria.

  • Morning tardiness is EXCUSED for medical/dental appointments if the parent has notified the attendance clerk prior to the event or if the parent accompanies the student to the office following the appointment; and a doctor’s note is provided.

  • A maximum of 5 parent EXCUSED tardies are allowed per school year.

  • Extended absences must be approved by a Quest administrator (Assistant Principal or Principal) before the absence takes place. Per APS Board of Education Policy JE-Student Attendance, only three (3) days of an extended absence will be excused if the following conditions are met:

    1. Student is in good academic standing (passing all classes with a grade of P);

    2. Student has no unexcused absences; or

    3. Student has four or fewer excused absences in a semester or seven or fewer excused absences for the school year.

In accordance with district policy, the administration may impose penalties which relate directly to classes missed while unexcused.

  • Students with excessive absences (excused or unexcused) may be required to provide medical documentation or report to the Quest clinic for verification of the reason for absences.

  • A student with excessive excused absences may also be considered truant if a reported illness cannot be verified or the reasons for the absences are not approved as excused by the administrator.

  • Teachers may be asked to provide make-up work if a student is absent for more than 2 days of excused absences.

  • Teachers will not be required to accept make-up work from students whose absences are unexcused, which can affect the student’s final grade.

Attendance Concerns

If there are any significant concerns about student attendance, Aurora Quest administration will follow the procedures as outlined in APS Policy JE- Student Attendance and APS Policy JE-R- Student Attendance. Attendance concerns arise when students accumulate more than four (4) unexcused absences in a semester or ten (10) unexcused days in a school year.
